Falli

Capital. Bishopstown.

National characteristics. Fallian society values glory and honour more than gold (there is no national currency) and is highly competitive. The people trade little, but their acrobats and singers travel throughout the West. They are regarded by others as poetic, but are suspected of tolerating heresy (see below) and immorality. The land has a central monarch, but much power is retained by the hereditary chieftains of the 12 tribal regions.

History. Falli has been traditionally allied with Marod against Jaryar, but its encircling mountains have been its greatest defence against invasion from the south and from the sea-going Barondans in the west, who are always hostile. Outright war broke out in 620, when Baronda invaded through the mountains; Falli was victorious. Baronda, in theory subdued, became Falli’s “thirteenth tribe,” and was forced to supply young hostages to ensure the continuation of the peace.

The Verian Contest and the Jubilee The annual Verian Contest, held in May, is a competition in various events, from ballad composition and performance to wrestling. It is open to all. Every seven years is the Jubilee, also in May, a time of reconciliation and homecoming.

The Secret Valley It is rumoured throughout Ragaris that there is a place in Falli that offers refuge to those whose religious beliefs are heretical or even non-Christian.
